Meetings and Classes

Meeting is important for communicating and planning for all businesses. Even colleges like Reinhardt use meeting to communicate the latest policies or events. Often faculty, staff and students spend much of they days going to meetings and classes. Frequently, those are excellent times to communicate about the events of the college. Most of committees or department meetings have a chairperson who facilitates the group discussion. Like college committees,   professor who lectures or facilitate class discussions.  Some meetings like Student Government Association Senate and the Reinhardt College Faculty Senate use proper procedures like Robert’s Rules, while other meetings are more casual. All the meetings are face to face usually two way communication.

Meeting at Reinhardt College are mixed in results in effectiveness. The faculty senate isn’t very effective because they only it meets twice a semester and usually have a difficult time making decisions on issues (May, 2008). Even SGA Senate that meets once a week has a difficult time making rational decisions and can be seen as ineffective. Furthermore, committees of these bodies aren’t very effective either. Most committee members don’t have sense of interdependence or lack open communication. For example the Student Government committees only meet for 20 or 30 minutes not giving them enough time to form high performance teams. Frequently, if these meetings last an hour they lack order and have no agenda.

The classroom could be one of the most effective means in communicating events and policy changes on campus. Frequently, students that aren’t active in student life are often are left out of the changes happening on campus which effect students. Professor should be open with students about the latest changes and get feedback on the latest issues. The professors need to take the feedback from the classroom and bring it to the faculty senate or to school deans through horizontal communication. The same is true with the student senate. Elected and appointed senators should take feed back from the club or students they represent and the feedback to the senate. Also, information learned at senate should go back to the students they represent. In addition the same should occur with committees. Often, committees are made up of individuals from different departments. For example, Action Planning is made up of members from Students Affairs, Admissions, and from the faculty.
